Women's Swimming Dives Into First Win

The women’s swimming and diving team started the season off with a win against Ivy League rival Yale. The Lions were able to contribute a complete team effort to win 11 of the 16 events and beat the Bulldogs, 173-127.

The Lions jumped out to an early lead after the three-meter diving event. Juniors Shannon Hosey and Joanna Corby were the stars of the diving event. Hosey won the event scoring 270.675 to best the field of six, and Joanna Corby placed 2nd with a score of 245.85. Later in the meet, Hosey and Corby placed 1st and 2nd in the 1-meter diving with scores of 253.3 and 233.10.

The first swimming event of the day resulted in a new Uris Pool record. The team of Lauren Fraley, Amy Krakauer, Allison Hobbs, and Hannah Galey set a new record in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:45.60. This time beat the previous pool record by more than half a second. This win set the tone for the rest of the meet for the Lions.

One of the most impressive events of the meet for the Light Blue was that it was able to take first, second, and third in the 100-yard backstroke. The team was led by junior Lauren Fraley who won the event with a time of 58.29. Sophomore Delghir Urubshurow clocked in with a time of 58.82, which was good enough for second place. Junior Bridgette McCabe completed the sweep, finishing third with a time of 59.14.

In the next race, the Lions were able to come up with a one-two finish in the 100-yard breaststroke. Freshman Mariele Dunn started her collegiate career off with a big splash by winning two events. She won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:04.91 and was followed by senior co-captain Amy Krakauer who clocked in with a time of 1:05.08. In the 200-yard individual medley relay, Dunn was the first to the wall in a time of 2:08.75.

The Lions were able to end the day with a victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The Columbia A relay team of Tina Hughes, Delghir Urubshurow, Lauren Fraley, and Hannah Galey won the race with a time of 3:31.74, which was a great ending to a great meet for the Lions.

Columbia will have two meets at home this coming weekend. Harvard will come to Uris Pool on Friday, and then the Lions will take on the Cadets from Army on Saturday.
