Women's Swimming Dominates Fordham

PUBLISHED NOVEMBER 20, 2007

The Columbia women’s swimming and diving team extended its winning streak to two yesterday against Fordham, beating the Rams with a final score of 180.5- 99.5. The Lions are now 3-1 on the season and remain 1-1 in the Ivy League.

The meet started off with the 200-yard-medley relay event in which the Lions took first and second. Columbia’s winning relay team, comprised of Bridgette McCabe, Amy Krakauer, Tina Hughes, and Hannah Galey, touched first with a time of 1:47.89, while the second-place Light Blue team clocked in with a time of 1:47.95, putting the Lions out to an early lead.

The following event proved to be one of the most exciting of the night. At the halfway point of the 1,000-yard freestyle, the Lions were trailing Rams swimmers in the top four places. But freshman Abby Reilly bested the field of eight with a final time of 10:27.68. Reilly also competed in the 500-yard freestyle event and finished in 5:09.08, fast enough for second place. The Light Blue was able to grab third in the 1,000-yard freestyle when junior Meg Brown swam a 10:31.69, her best time in the 1,000 this season.

So far this season, the Lions have been dominating the competition when it comes to the breaststroke events. Last night against the Rams was no different. Senior co-captain Amy Krakauer placed first in the 50-yard breaststroke, finishing with a time of 29.74. Right behind Krakauer was freshman Mariele Dunn, who finished with a time of 30.38. Dunn also competed in the 100-yard breaststroke event, winning the event in 1:05.36.

Columbia was also able to achieve a sweep in the 50-yard butterfly event. Sophomore Allison Hobbs won the event with a time of 26.20, while junior Hannah Galey finished in second place with a time of 27.05. Tina Hughes completed the sweep at third with a time of 27.17.

The Lions ended the evening similarly to the way they started it—with a win in a relay event. In the 200-yard-freestyle relay, the team of Galey, Ashley MacLean, Erica Dorfman, and Hobbs won the final event with a time of 1:38.98. The “B” relay from Columbia was able to grab third place in the final event of the day.

The Lions will not be in action again until after Thanksgiving break, travelling to Princeton, N.J. to compete in the Big Al Invite beginning Nov. 30.
