Grad Student Assaulted in Morningside Park

PUBLISHED DECEMBER 6, 2007

A graduate student was assaulted and robbed Tuesday afternoon in Morningside Park, near West 121st Street.

The aggressors—four young men, one wielding a gun and another a knife—beat the student’s head and body, knocking the student to the ground. The assailants, described as two black and two black or dark-skinned Hispanic men between the ages of 16 and 20, between the heights of 5-foot-10-inches and 5-foot-11-inches and the weights of 150 and 170 pounds, were dressed in dark clothing, with one wearing a bubble jacket. All four remain at large.

The 26th Precinct, which is handling the case, the Deputy Commissioner for Public Information, and Columbia Public Safety all declined to comment. Individuals with additional information are encouraged to call Detective Shannon of the 26th Pct. Detective Squad at 212-678-1351, ext. 52-53.

Are we sure the "victim" wasn't striking these African Americans' fists and feet with his head and ribs? The skull can be a lethal weapon - the ancient art of Tau Mao illustrates 1007 ways to kill using nothing but the human skull.

And the money? Perhaps the "victim" is an obsessive philanthrope and insulted these African Americans by foisting money on them - ill gotten no doubt .

A very similar incident happened to me on 123rd Street walking back from the subway along the northern edge of Morningside Park two years ago. I was punched in the face repeatedly, pushed to the ground, kicked in the head repeatedly, and my wallet was stolen by two seemingly unarmed assailants (who were at most in their early twenties, but seemed like they were definitely teenagers).

This happened during the time that I was a graduate student at Teachers College (I also went to undergrad at Columbia)...I reported the incident to the police and TC security, but I never reported the event to the Spec... I wish I had.

People need to know that Morningside Park and the surrounding area are unsafe and improperly lit. Area residents should demand more lighting and ask for increased police patrols of the Morningside Park area. People should also support harsher penalties for carrying illegal weapons, and should support a total gun ban in NYC.

Lastly, I would add, as a Chicano man, I find nothing about this article to be racist. Thank you spectator for publishing this article, it helps to keep people safe...the true racists are the white, racist, so-called liberals who do not care about the safety of area residents and want to suppress media coverage of violent incidents.

I am very sorry that this incident happened to this individual.

Ugh. Glad I didn't go to Columbia. Don't want to be beat up by thugs.

THIS ARTICLE IS RACIST!!!!

Any witnesses? What did they steal? Do some reporting!

Lydia! Didnt you know its racist to describe the ethnicity of the attackers? Better that students be on the lookout for menacing white men instead, that way we dont hurt anyone's feelings! Besides...the graduate student is probably white, and the "attackers" were probably just venting their frustration at having to live in such a vile racist society such as America. Free the Morningside Four! No justice, no peace!

Hey there, Thats the most absurd comment I've read on this website. A student from Columbia was mugged and physically assaulted and could have possibly been in mortal danger and you're talking about "feelings" ? And how the attackers were "venting" ?? Give me a break and get off your crazy horse.
It is not racist in the least to mention the attackers ethnicities. It would be racist if these people attacked this Columbia student because of his race.

Pretty sure the previous comment was meant sarcastically.

now, now, no sense of humor allowed.
