Lions Look to Cheung-Lau and Lee In The Search For More Ivy League Victories
The Columbia men’s swimming and diving team (3-4, 0-4 Ivy) will compete this Saturday against Brown. The Lions are still searching for their first Ivy League victory of the season. Last weekend, the team lost in a close meet against Cornell, the third year in a row that the Light Blue has fell to them. The final score was (147-163) coming down to the last relay where Cornell out touched Columbia for first.
Brown (2-3, 2-2 Ivy) recently lost to Ivy League powerhouse Harvard by a landslide with a final score of (202-98). The Bears will be relying on junior Daniel Ricketts to score points against Columbia. Ricketts was the only swimmer to win an event at the Crimson meet, taking first place in both the 100 and 200-yard backstrokes. Brown has a powerful diver as well, freshman Jonathan Speed who won the three meter dive.
Columbia may have to work on its diving, for the Big Red swept the event taking the top four places. Thankfully, the Light Blue made up the points in the swimming events and they hopefully will be able to repeat that this weekend.
Columbia will have to step it up this meet for a victory for Brown has beaten Penn, which the Light Blue lost to. The Lions will have to look to freshman Adam Powell in the sprinting category and Cedric Chung-Lau who dominated the 500 free last weekend with a (4:38.02), five seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. The most notable performance of the Cornell meet was certainly Hyun Lee who set a new pool record in the 100-fly with a time of (49.21).
While this meet may not be as exciting as last weekend’s Ivy-League matchup, the Lions will be sure to keep fans on the edge of their seats with fast swims and hopefully some more pool records. The meet will start at 3:30 on Saturday at the Uris Pool.
