A Weekend with the Folks

PUBLISHED FEBRUARY 22, 2008

Feb. 22 - The Grayson Sanders Band
The Grayson Sanders Band, a New York underground jazz folk band whose members met at NYU, will be playing The Bitter End on Friday night. Other acts include Wet Coma, Cortez The Killer, and Katyusha. With such a mélange of music, how could you go wrong? The show starts at 8:30 p.m. and tickets are $15 at the door.

Feb. 22 - Taken by Tree
But just in case you’re not looking for any kind of mélange, Taken By Trees will be performing at the Hiro Ballroom on Friday as well. Considering their lead singer (who used to front a Swedish pop band) and debut album (which includes a well done cover of Axl Rose’s “Sweet Child O’ Mine”), you’ll almost definitely be taken by Taken By Trees. The concert starts at 7 p.m. and tickets are $20 at the door.

Feb. 23 - Wildwood
Extending this week’s dendrophilic line-up, Wild-Wood, a band hailing from Northhampton, MA, is playing Caffe Vivaldi in the West Village. Wild-Wood believes in the beauty of the human voice and uses instruments only as a backing for their vocal talents. But that’s not to say that they aren’t talented with their given instruments—their songs include fiddles, an upright bass, guitar, piano, drums, and a mandolin. Their set begins at 9:30 p.m. There’s no cover, but Caffe Vivaldi has delicious ravioli, so don’t go with an empty wallet.

Feb. 24 - Wye Oak
Why wood? Who knows, but it sure does make for one hell of a weekend lineup. Wye Oak is playing the Cake Shop Sunday night, a great end to a wooden folk weekend. Wye Oak boasts a female lead vocalist—her best male friend sings backup. This solid folk band promises a very lively show and a satisfying Sunday night. The show starts at 8 p.m. and is only $6—which is good, because that ravioli from Caffe Vivaldi probably burned a hole in your pocket last night.
