Cornell Trounces Lacrosse 16-2 in Ivy League Season Opener
In its second weekend—and the first that brought a game against an Ivy League competitor—the Columbia women’s lacrosse team split games against Wagner and Cornell. The Lions brought their season record to 2-2, 0-1 in the Ivy League by handily defeating Wagner on Thursday before falling to Cornell on Sunday.
Coming off their impressive 14-3 victory against Wagner on Thursday, during which senior co-captain Marisa Marcellino became Columbia’s all-time leading scorer with 128 career points, the Lions still proved unable to control the Big Red on Sunday.
The Lions had seven different scorers, including junior Holly Glynn with five goals and senior Marcellino with three, in Thursday’s game. Four different Lions were credited with assists.
Columbia outplayed the Seahawks in nearly every category, including draw control, shots-on-goal, and groundball control. Two of the Seahawks’ goals came on free position shots, and junior goalie Emma Mintz chalked up five saves.
Sunday’s game in Ithaca, however, was a very different story.
Cornell came out strong, controlling the first three draws and going on a 5-0 run in the opening half of the game before a foul gave Columbia sophomore attacker Frances Callaghan a free position shot that brought the score to 5-1.
From there, however, the Big Red continued to dominate, scoring six more goals in the first half to bring the halftime score to 11-1. The team would score three more in the beginning of the second half before the Lions answered back to the 9-0 run.
After freshman midfield Lizzie Lee scored on another free position shot and brought the game to 13-2, the Big Red never looked back, finishing the game with another three goals to a final score of 16-2.
Cornell, who is undefeated this season at 3-0 (1-0, Ivy), notched 34 shots on goal to Columbia’s nine. They demonstrated their depth, as 11 different players contributed to the 16 goals.
Goalie Emma Mintz had another impressive game, earning ten saves to bring her season total up to 31.
The Lions will play LaSalle next Friday and Oregon next Sunday before resuming Ivy League play against Dartmouth on March 23. Though they did not face LaSalle last year, they played and lost to Dartmouth, 11-5.
