Impeachment Rumors Wrack GS Council
Following a riotous half-term of controversy over financial issues and a less than ideal financial aid announcement, several members of the General Studies Student Council are reportedly unhappy with the actions of GSSC President Niko Cunningham and have discussed the possibility of removing him from office.
According to several reports, a motion for Cunningham’s impeachment was supposed to appear on the agenda for Tuesday night’s GSSC meeting, though an actual agenda was never distributed.
Discontent with the current leadership comes after a March 14 financial aid meeting between several GSSC members and GS deans. GSSC VP of Communications Brody Berg said that it became apparent at that meeting that Cunningham had not attended arranged meetings with Dean Awn as promised, and had never followed up to reschedule. “It’s been a problem,” Berg said. “There’s been a communication breakdown.”
Such claims contradict statements Cunningham made that Awn’s office had been uncooperative, that the dean had allowed plans to meet to fall through, and that the GSSC had not been properly consulted when drafting the financial aid package.
Berg said that he felt Cunningham’s distance from the GS administration would not be helpful in gaining greater financial opportunities for GS students burdened with debt. “We need people at the table,” Berg said.
Cunningham was unconcerned with the prospect of being faced with an impeachment motion, and was confident that if a motion were ever proposed, opponents would be unable to gain the support needed to remove him from office.
“That boat will never sail,” Cunningham said.
