Golf Takes Sixth in Hoya Invitational

PUBLISHED APRIL 2, 2008

Despite rainy conditions, the Columbia women’s golf team completed its first tournament since its return from winter training, finishing sixth in a pool of fourteen teams in the Hoya Women’s Invitational. The Lions traveled to Beallsville, Md. to compete in the Invitational hosted by Georgetown Women’s Golf on Monday and Tuesday. Sophomore Stevy Loy placed the highest for the Lions at thirteenth place. Loy had a combined score of 234 with three consecutive scores of 78, 74 and 82. She won her first collegiate invitational this fall at the Spider Invitational in Midlothian, Virginia.

Other notable performances at the Hoya Invitational were by freshman Jennifer Adyorough and junior Nancy Shon who tied for 24th place with a score of 240. While not all conference schools were represented at the tournament, a few were, which gave the Lions a good indicator of how competitive the rest of the season will be.

Princeton University took first, with their number one player Susannah Aboff winning the tournament with the combined low score of 221. Rollins College of Florida took second, while fellow Ancient Eight member Yale took third. The only other Ivy League school that participated was the University of Pennsylvania.

With only one tournament left before the Ivy League Championships, the Lions will be hard at work for the next two weeks. Last year, the only Ivy League team to beat Columbia was Princeton. Next weekend, the Lions will host the Second Annual Roar-ee Invitational in Mamaroneck, New York at the Hampshire Country Club.
