Lacrosse Drops Fourth Ivy Contest to Tigers
After losing its first three games of conference play, the Columbia lacrosse team (3-6, 0-4 Ivy) did not get a breather as it faced second-ranked Princeton (8-0, 2-0 Ivy) last night. The Lions never had a chance in this matchup, falling behind by four goals in the first period before junior attacker Holly Glynn found the back of the net for her team-high 26th goal of the year. After this one slip-up by the Princeton defense, the Tigers resumed their control of the period and took a 7-1 lead into the intermission.
Sophomore attacker Brittany Shannon had an outstanding night for the Light Blue—her three goals in the second half gave her a hat trick—but her scoring could not carry Columbia to a victory. By the time Shannon recorded her first tally, the Tigers had nine. Nevertheless, the fact that she was able to find the back of the net three times in a span of just over 14 minutes should give the Lions confidence going into future games. Shannon now has 22 goals on the season.
When the game ended, Princeton walked away with a comfortable 15-4 win. The Light Blue gave up at least 10 goals for the seventh time this year and has allowed each of its Ivy opponents thus far to score in double figures. Columbia had trouble maintaining possession of the ball—the Tigers won more ground balls and draw controls than did the Lions, who turned the ball over 21 times to Princeton’s 11. While her numbers did not seem good for this game, junior goalkeeper Emma Mintz did make eight saves in the losing effort.
“We played hard for 60 minutes,” freshman midfielder Lizzie Lee said. “Good games are to come.”
The Light Blue continues its home stand against Brown on Saturday. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
