Loss to Yale Pushes Lacrosse’s Ivy League Record to 0-5
The Columbia women’s lacrosse team lost a heartbreaking game Wednesday, as it fell to Yale 16-8 in New Haven.
The Lions entered the game 0-5 in the Ivy League, with hopes of picking up their first Ancient Eight victory in two seasons, but lost in a game that saw the Bulldogs score the first six goals of the contest.
Yale, ranked 13th in the country, sits fourth in the league behind Penn, Princeton, and Brown with a 3-2 conference record and a 9-4 record overall.
The Bulldogs, who came out strong and were dominant in most categories in the first half, including draw controls, shots on goal, and ground ball control, never lost the lead they gained at the start, even though the Lions picked up their game in the second half.
While play evened out in the later parts of the game and the Lions began to catch up to the Bulldogs, they could not recover from Yale’s first half domination.
The most impressive player on the field for the Bulldogs, as expected, was senior Lauren Taylor, who won Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week this week and scored four goals against the Light Blue. Last year, when Columbia faced Yale, Taylor tallied seven of Yale’s 16 goals.
Many of the Lions who have already been impressive this season continued their strong play.
Sophomore attacker Brittany Shannon, who already had 22 goals on the season, added three more to her total, while junior attacker Holly Glynn scored two and senior midfield Marisa Marcellino contributed one. Glynn also extended her scoring streak to 27 games.
Junior goalie Emma Mintz brought in five saves on Wednesday, bringing her total up to 70 on the entire season.
The Lions, who have this coming weekend off, will continue their season next Wednesday, when they play Fairfield.
