Lacrosse Extends Losing Streak to Seven
Junior attacker Holly Glynn scored six goals, including one that tied the game at nine goals with fewer than eight minutes remaining, but she could not carry the Columbia lacrosse team (3-9, 0-6 Ivy) to victory. Instead, the Lions fell in devastating fashion, 10-9, at Fairfield (14-1, 5-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) Wednesday night. The defeat extended their losing streak to a season-worst seven matches, while Fairfield has now won all of its games since a season-opening loss.
While the Light Blue could not overcome a skid that began March 16, it did not give the Stags an easy win. Fairfield found the back of the net less than a minute into the game and built a 2-0 lead, but Glynn soon answered with a tally of her own. Not only did she end the night having scored two-thirds of Columbia’s goals, but Glynn’s offense came at crucial points. In addition to recording the Lions’ first and last tallies of the game, she cut what could have been a two-goal halftime deficit to a one-goal disadvantage with just 19 seconds left in the first period. She then quickly tied the game, 4-4, in the second half. Glynn kept the game close, but she alone was not able to defeat the Stags. She now has 29 goals on the season.
In addition to Glynn, midfielders Megan Donovan, Gabrielle Geronimos, and Lizzie Lee scored for Columbia. Freshman midfielder Kristen Coleman led Fairfield with a hat trick, while three other players each recorded two tallies for the Stags.
The Light Blue will close the 2008 season with a three-game home stand. On Saturday, the team will host conference rival Harvard in its last league matchup of the year. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
