The Columbia men’s and women’s golf teams will compete in the Ivy League Championships this weekend after the completion of semi-successful seasons.
The women rounded off league play with the self-hosted Second Annual Roar-EE Invitational in Mamaroneck, N.Y. at the Hampshire Country Club and placed seventh out of 14 teams at the tournament. While Brigham Young University, a non-Ivy League competitor won the event, there were several Ancient Eight teams in attendance, which will give the Lions a good indicator of what to expect at the championships. Harvard and Yale look like the teams to beat, placing second and third, respectively. Princeton finished right in front of Columbia in sixth place.
Columbia will be looking to Stevy Loy, who has consistently finished in first place for the Lions this season. She continued this trend at the recent Invitational by finishing 15th overall with scores of 78-89-81 for a combined score of 248. Also placing well were freshman Jennifer Adyorough, who placed 19th with a combined score of 250, and Carly Nathanson, who placed 30th with a final score of 254. Princeton junior Susannah Aboff has a good chance at winning the Ivy Championships this year, as she placed third in the Roar-EE tournament, losing only to two women from BYU. If the Lions step up their game for the culmination of their season, they could be a strong contenders to defend their Ivy League title from last season.
The men’s team has improved steadily throughout their season, finishing eighth out of 15 teams at the Princeton Invitational this past weekend. Similar to the women’s last tournament, there was a strong representation from the Ivies, although not all teams were in attendance. While nonconference St. John’s took the title, Princeton was the top school from the Ancient Eight, finishing in third. While the Tigers have improved significantly since last year, where they took sixth at the Ivies, the Lions—who finished third at last year’s tournament—will have to bring their best game if they are to finish that well this year. Sophomore Cashel Rosier will be expected to bring the Lions considerable points as he finished the highest for the Light Blue at 25th place at the Princeton Invitational with scores of 74, 79, and 69 for a combined score of 222. Freshmen Clark Granum and Justin Lee will also be expected to score well, as they finished right behind Rosier with scores of 223 and 224, respectively.
Both of the Ivy League Championships will be on Friday and Saturday in Atlantic City, N.J.
