Lacrosse Looks for First Ivy Win Of the Season Against Harvard
After suffering a devastating one-goal defeat at Fairfield on Wednesday, the Columbia lacrosse team (3-9, 0-6 Ivy) returns to New York with the hopes of garnering its first win since March 14. On that day, the Lions scored a season-high 21 goals to easily take down LaSalle. Since then, however, they are averaging 6.4 tallies while allowing opponents to score 13.7 goals per game.
The Light Blue will face Harvard (7-6, 1-4 Ivy) on Saturday. While Columbia has lost its past seven games, the Crimson is embroiled in a skid of its own—Harvard is riding a five-game losing streak. Despite these strings of defeats, each team is certain to enter Saturday’s matchup with the intensity needed to win. The Lions are coming off a game they could have won, and the Crimson will want to prove itself after an 11-7 loss to Dartmouth.
Junior attacker Holly Glynn leads the Light Blue with 29 goals on the year, including six of Columbia’s nine tallies on Wednesday. For the Lions to even remain in contention against Harvard, Glynn will need to continue her prolific scoring. Columbia will also need contributions from sophomore attacker Brittany Shannon, who has recorded 27 tallies this season, and senior midfielder Marisa Marcellino, who has scored 16 goals and has a team-high 14 assists this year.
The Crimson will look to junior attacker Kaitlin Martin and freshman midfielder Jess Halpern, who pack a powerful one-two punch for Harvard on the offensive side. Martin leads her team with 30 tallies and 19 assists, while Halpern has found the back of the net 28 times. In addition to this tandem, sophomore attacker Sara Flood has racked up 18 goals and 14 assists. The Light Blue defense will need to be at its best against these players.
Game time is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Baker Field Complex.
