The Columbia women’s lacrosse team (4-10, 0-7 Ivy) put an eight-game losing streak to rest as it overtook the University of California, Berkeley (9-6, 4-0 Pac-10), 11-7, at Lawrence A. Wien Stadium on Monday. According to the April 21 LaxPower poll, Cal is the 30th-best team in the nation.
The Lions’ offense, led by junior attacker Holly Glynn and sophomore attacker Brittany Shannon, played an extraordinary game. The Light Blue scored five goals in the first half and never led by fewer than two goals for the rest of the game.
Glynn, with three goals on the day, had a landmark game—she became the highest single-season scorer in the history of Columbia’s lacrosse program with 41 goals. She also contributed three assists, bringing her total number of points—which is the combination of goals and assists—to 51, another single-season record.
Shannon also had three goals on the day, making her season totals an impressive 31 goals and 39 points. Sophomore attacker Frances Callaghan chipped in two goals in a game that saw six different Lions find the back of the net.
The game was also impressive on the defensive front, especially with the performance by junior goalkeeper Emma Mintz. Mintz dominated the net to finish with 14 saves on the day, six of which were free possession shots. Her season total is up to 127 saves with one game left to play.
While the Golden Bears and Lions seemed to be of equal ability on paper—both teams were about even in draw controls, ground balls, and turnovers—the game was dominated by Columbia, which had an impressive showing on offense and in goal. This victory will be sure to give the Light Blue some much-needed momentum for its last game of the year.
Though the Lions will finish their season without an Ivy win, they improve their record in nonconference games to 4-3 and will look to make it 5-3 with their final matchup. The Light Blue closes its season by hosting nonconference Bucknell on Wednesday.
