Veterans, New Comers Face Off in GSSC Debates

PUBLISHED APRIL 23, 2008

Financial aid, housing, and loan debt were hot topics at Tuesday night’s General Studies Student Council candidate debates, where presidential and Vice President of Policy hopefuls presented platforms with a common thread—what candidates purported as a return to integrity for the beleaguered council.

In an opening to a packed room, Vice President of Policy candidates Dave Minchin, Michael Rain, and Worker’s Representative Allen Settle all focused on transparency and effectiveness in leadership, and stressed the need for parity with other undergraduate schools.

The presidential debates focused on the future, as executive board veterans Keith Hightower and Brody Berg emphasized their experience while Inter-school Representative Ishmael Osekre and council newcomer Virdis Bala stressed the importance of their new approaches to GS shortfalls.

“We’ve all seen what the past GS council can do, and it’s time to move forward in a different direction,” said Osekre, who announced that he would push for guaranteed housing for GS students. Citing his experience in event planning that allowed him to work closely with other students, councils, and leaders, Osekre said he would bring to the council “fresh ideas and solutions to the same old problems.”

“I’m bringing the experience, relationships that I’ve built, understanding of how things work in the system, so that we can all consolidate,” Osekre said, adding that he would also push for increased security for GS students and a greater involvement in CUArts.

Current Vice President of Finance Hightower mentioned his experience in both business and in working with councils and student leaders, cautioning against electing a completely fresh-faced president, which he said was sometimes “risky business.” Hightower pointed out that this year’s executive board was comprised of many new faces. “We don’t need to go through another learning period,” he said.

Current Vice-President of Communications Berg reminded audience members of his experience and extensive work on the web portal gslounge.com saying, “This candidacy is about capitalizing on those lessons and relationships.”

But Bala criticized Berg and Hightower for contributing to what he saw as an inert council. “You guys were completely unable to do anything right,” he said, attacking Berg and Hightower for overdue financial aid initiatives and their personal council records. When Bala was asked whether he was simply “angry” without plans for change, he assured GS voters that he had seriously focused his efforts on researching financial reports of the school and developing new ways to actively approach the aid problem.

Hightower persisted that he would “move the GSSC into a direction that would be more productive, more effective, and more professional.” A problem with this year’s council, he commented, was a collective lowering of standards—something he said he wants to rectify. “I plan on raising that standard.”

Hightower proposed subsidized housing vouchers to counteract the skyrocketing housing costs, as well as offering University-backed student loans and summer courses to help students complete academic requirements while minimizing costs.

Hightower and Berg continued to rally against this year’s “failed” council. “We have to have a leader who can keep the council together,” Hightower said. “We were challenged in getting even the most basic things done,” Berg agreed, describing himself as a “background leader” who would give council leaders the tools they needed to function in their positions.

“It was a difficult semester. ... The GSSC was under a lot of pressure to present a positive image,” Osekre agreed.

“This is a new opportunity,” Berg said in the concluding remarks. “It’s a new era.”

The debate was about the future and about change. The “false promises” are clearly traits that the candidates who are already members of the GSSC have since they have not done anything substantial for yet. (Berg and Hightower) We need change- hope you all voted for Virdis.

Virdis Bala is by far the best candidate. He has obviously done extensive research and is committed to his views. I have not heard the other candidates plans come close to being as honest and as well thought out as Virdis’. Virdis has the integrity that is so lacking in the council. For the commenter’s who say he is inexperienced: are you content with the current “experienced” council? Virdis Bala is exactly what the GSSC needs.

Vidris' videos are far from reminiscent of Cunningham's campaign. Vidris is ALL substance. You are obviously a minion of the the Borg, I mean Berg, I mean the administrations machine. Which other candidates have offered such tangible solutions and insight into the workings of our financial aid. No other candidate even has the command of our financial aid system to even begin talking about financial aid. He is not smoke and mirrors. He is the real deal. Finally. Such a breath of fresh air to hear him speak. I've been at GS for over three years now, and I've seen several seasons of GSSC elections, there has never been a candidate with that knowledge of the the inner workings of our financial aid. He has done the research, and thus is in the very best position to attack the problems. He may not be the greatest public speaker, but he is definitely the sharpest candidate out of the lot.

Why does everyone post as anonymous??

Really brave you guys!

I just cast my ballot, in every position, for all past and present members of Weezer. I think they would make the best council moving forward.

Virdis is a joke. The inexperience, the empty promises and the YouTube videos are frigtheningly reminiscent of Niko Cunningham's campaign last year. The School of General Studies learned a hard lesson and paid the price to buying into the hype and believing smoke and mirrors. Empty promises and inexperience is not a way to effect change. Hightower was disqualified. Osekre's campaign is an insult and he is an opportunist: he was NEVER a member of GSSC and used the name without permission and promised funds.

Brody Berg is the wave of the future and the GSSC's only saving grace. He has been the voice of reason and sanity while consistently and concisely producing results.

Another patently false statement, god is that you Brody? Osekre was part of GSSC as Inter School Ambassador, perhaps Mr. Borg, or Dean Awns' version of Mini Me slash GS Admin's hand puppet, has removed all traces of Osekre's council days from his sole creation the GS Lounge. Oh wait, he lied about the GS Lounge, just like he liked that he tried to function on the eBoard but big bad Mr. Cunningham "threatened" him and made it so vewy divicwult to dwo hwis wittle job. Anyone voting for Berg is going to get the same manure they've received from all prior councils. All fluff, no substance. How about that weekly school wide calendar though!!!

Thanks for posting your own endorsement Brody. Wave of the future? Oh really? Let me count the ways of his incompetence. First in a very Niko-inian manner he "massaged" the facts about the GS Lounge. No wait, he flat out lied. He built NOTHING, another GS Student built GS Lounge.com. What has he done? He was relieved of his email priveleges after abusing it for personal campaign purposes. I'll wait for your reply as to Brody's greatness. Hightower being DQ'd was no surprise, the EC and the JC have been blatantly partisan led by two hacks.

It's funny that Hightower would talk about "lowering standards" this is a man who flatly refused to utilize technology to serve his constituents. His reply, when asked by Mr. Berg to place some materials on the web "Aww Brody you know I don't believe in all that internet stuff". So if anything the standard was lowered by letting someone like Hightower or Berg on the council. The collective standard of the council was low, therefore both Hightower and Berg should do the entire student body a favor and recuse themselves from this campaign. If people vote for these two, they deserve what they get, another ineffective and inadequate council. One more thing, Hightower was inadequate in preparing for his presidential campaign as he was even unable to file in time to be on the ballot, hence his hastily thrown together "Write In" Campaign. Hightower and Berg are a joke, just like the entire GSSC will be if they're again in a leadership position.

Virdis is a breath of fresh air. Instead of people who base their entire platform on being buried inside Dean Awn's colon he actually wishes to speak truth to power, and often that doesn't allow for a very friendly relationship with the powers that be. However the administration has fooled the entire GS Student body into believing that it is entirely Mr. Cunningham's fault that there is a dearth of available housing, financial aid and lacklustre alumni connections. Pray tell, what has the GS Administration really done for the students? Allowed us the honor of spending untold amounts of money for an Ivy League education? What is a real sham is the horrid condition of the GS Alumni network. What's the use of an Ivy league education when the very lifeblood of said education, the alumni network, is hard to tap into. Is there an alumni person on the council? What is Jose Gonzales doing?

If you haven't already checked out Vidris' campaign platform on Facebook, do yourself a favor, whether you vote for him or not, and check it out. The financial aid video that he released is one of the most informative presentations on GS financial aid that I've ever seen, and he offers some very fresh solutions, that no candidate to date has proposed.
