University to Honor Minghui Yu at Memorial With Music, Flowers

PUBLISHED APRIL 25, 2008

Today at noon the University will hold a memorial in the Low Library Rotunda for Minghui Yu, the 24-year-old statistics graduate student who was tragically killed by a car while fleeing an assault earlier this month.

Yu’s parents arrived last week from the family’s home in Shandong province in eastern China, and met with Columbia administrators Wednesday to plan the ceremony. University officials had also met previously with Yu’s friends from the Columbia University Chinese Students and Scholars Association to discuss the memorial, and CUCSSA members proposed potential ways to honor Yu—with flowers, Minghui’s favorite music, and displayed photographs.

University President Lee Bollinger, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dean Henry C. Pinkham, University Chaplain Jewelnel Davis, friends, and faculty are scheduled to speak at the ceremony.
