Lions Look to Extend Winning Streak to Three
Confidence is high right now on the men's tennis team as it enters its match against Radford today, having surrendered only a single point between the Lions' 7-0 and 6-1 wins against Binghamton and Army, respectively.
Men's head coach Bid Goswami, who shuffled the lineup between games against Binghamton and Army, will field a lineup with junior Jared Drucker playing number one singles and junior Mark Clemente playing number two. Goswami plans to fill his top singles slot by a platoon of the two juniors.
Drucker, who played number one singles in the Lions' last match at Army, was cautiously optimistic when asked about the match. "It's a big match. Radford has two really good players at number one and number two, Martin Sayer and James Lloyd."
Drucker will play Sayer at number one today. He should be somewhat familiar with his game, considering that he scouted Sayer's match at the National Indoor tournament that both players qualified for.
Drucker added that Radford's talent beyond its two top players was not to be underestimated, with Radford's three through six singles players also posting impressive results throughout the season. "Myself and the other players have been looking at their previous results. They're very good."
Men's tennis plays Radford at noon tomorrow at Baker Field's Dick Savitt Center.
Women's tennis started inauspiciously with two losses over an unkind trip to Boston last weekend. Against Boston College it fell 6-1 and against Boston University it received a 7-0 shellacking, and will look to bounce back against University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
Despite losing both of their doubles points, Manisha Patel, in her first year as the Lions' assistant coach, said that the Lions scored "encouraging results" in their Boston excursion.
The match against UMBC begins today at 3:30 p.m. at the Dick Savitt Center.
