In addition to using her time in college to bridge the artistic and digital worlds as a visual arts major with a minor in computer science, Esther White, BC '07, shared her love of hardcore punk rock by hosting a show on WBAR, Barnard's radio station.
When she applied to college, White said she knew that art would be an important part of her life. But during her years at Barnard, she has come to discover that she wants to pursue it as a career as well.
"My goals became clearer to me," White said. "When I got to college, I wanted to be an academic. It's clear to me now that friends and family are much more important. Art has also solidified its importance to me."
Party Pictures, White's senior project, represents the intersection of the digital and visual worlds. The project evolved from photographs that White took "just for fun" at parties. She later developed a full-fledged Web site, featuring a randomized grid of 20 photos based on similarities.
White supplemented her academic studies in visual arts by co-curating exhibitions at and designing the Web site for the Postcrypt Art Gallery. She also worked at a collective gallery project named Orchard.
Since 2004, White has been working as a residential computing assistant in the computer lab of Barnard's Lehman Library. She also designed the Barnard's Resnet Web site, creating the web design while serving as an RCA. She said the job was "instrumental" in her academic choices, prompting her to minor in computer science.
As part of her position, she contributed to Love Your Computer week at Barnard, which this year encouraged identity security on the Internet. White continued her work with computers at WBAR, designing the station's Web site while also hosting her show.
