Young Resident of 109th St. Reported Missing

PUBLISHED MAY 31, 2008

Christina Fernandez, a 12-year-old who lives at 235 W. 109th Street, is missing.

Christina was last seen Friday morning at 8 a.m. at her home. “She was wearing a purple t-shirt with the word ‘YORKIE’ in gold lettering, blue jeans and blue Converse sneakers with a green stripe,” a police flyer said. She is approximately 5’5” and 125 pounds, mother Delia Fernandez said.

Christina is a student at The School at Columbia University, a K-8 school at 556 W. 110th Street. “She never made it to school,” Delia said. “She went running. Usually I go with her to school in the morning—this particular morning she just did not go to school.”

Local residents have been posting flyers around the neighborhood with the help of Paula Diamond Roman, Democratic District Leader for the 69th Assembly District. “You know, she’s 12—it’s sort of scary,” Roman said.

Christina’s parents are currently gathering information from her school, friends, neighbors, and other parents, Delia said. “Christina is a very good student at the Columbia School. It’s just so much that is going on. We’re working with the police and just trying to piece this whole crazy puzzle together,” Delia said.

Police have classified Christina as a missing person, but said they do not suspect violent or criminal activity.

Anyone with relevant information is asked to call the 24th Precinct detective squad at (212) 678-1863 or the Fernandez home at (212) 866-2023.
