Missing Girl Returns Home

PUBLISHED JUNE 3, 2008

After more than a day during which her whereabouts were unknown, Christina Fernandez, a 12-year-old resident of 235 W 109th Street, returned home Saturday afternoon, Paula Diamond Roman, Democratic Leader for the 69th Assembly District, said in an email Monday.

Christina disappeared Friday morning on her way to school, her mother, Delia Fernandez, said. “She never made it to school…She went running. Usually I go with her to school in the morning—this particular morning she just did not go to school.” Christina attends at The School at Columbia University, a K-8 school at 556 W. 110th Street.

In hopes of finding the missing girl, many members of the community rallied together, posting flyers throughout the area. The community effort was deeply felt by Christina’s parents. Following Christina’s return home, her father, Felipe Fernandez, thanked “everyone who helped put up posters,” Paula said in an email, adding, “They really appreciated the neighborhood support.”

The Fernandez’s could not be reached for comment.
