The four student councils’ recently released video “Our Blue” lacks the depth of the Columbia experience.
But before we start picking apart who doesn’t deserve to be here, maybe it’s worth considering what the parameters of merit are.

The number of applicants rose 3 percent from last year, with 5,606 total applicants. Only 1,151 were admitted for its class of 2017, making Barnard’s admission process 34 percent more selective since 2009.
The rate of admission for Columbia's class of 2017 dropped to a record-low of 6.89 percent, while the number of applicants rose 5 percent from the year before.
Columbia College and the School of Engineering and Applied Science received 33,460 applications for the class of 2017, up from 31,818 for the class of 2016.
Barnard received a record-breaking number of early decision applications for its class of 2017 and has seen an increase of 53 percent in the number of early decision applications since 2009.
Becoming a global university means more than just accepting international students—it’s also a question of attracting more internationally minded students and finding the best ways to integrate international students into a student body that is still largely American.
Council members said that the group’s needs have been largely ignored and that administrators should do more to recruit Native students.
Columbia College and the School of Engineering and Applied Science received 3,126 Early Decision applications for the Class of 2017.
