The School of Engineering and Applied Science Committee on Instruction voted unanimously to remove the preprofessional requirement from the undergraduate core, beginning with the class of 2018.

In a long-awaited report, the Educational Policy and Planning Committee has recommended eliminating the lecture portion of Frontiers of Science and rebuilding the course around its small seminars.
A pilot program passed by the Committee on Instruction for the School of Engineering and Applied Science will allow SEAS students to pass/fail up to six credits of their non-technical electives just three days after Columbia College Student Council voted to change its P/D/F policy for first-years.
Unlike students in Columbia College, SEAS students cannot receive credit for any class taken pass/fail, but a recent ESC survey found that 200 of 269 polled students are in favor of instituting a pass/fail option for non-technical electives.
The Educational Policy and Planning Committee will discuss issues ranging from the Frontiers of Science curriculum to study abroad programs, but will have merely advisory powers to the broader Policy and Planning Committee.
It's too late for the class to be approved for the spring, but committee members say it's possible the course could happen in the future.
The anthropology department has proposed the course, "Occupy the Field: Global Finance, Inequality, Social Movement," but it has not been presented to the Committee on Instruction for approval.
A new undergraduate initiative is pushing for student-led courses.
In the aftermath of last fall's hunger strike, the administration has paid greater attention to the ways that students can impact the Core and curricula across Columbia College.
