Community Board 7 voted nearly unanimously Wednesday night to name the section of West 97th Street between Amsterdam Avenue and Broadway after Ariel Russo, a four-year-old girl who was killed at the intersection this summer by a speeding, unlicensed driver.
Community Board 9 will soon vote on whether to name the 500-block of West 121st Street after Carlin, who grew up there, but not after a long fight put up by the church on the block.
Carlin grew up on 121st Street, between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue, but a local church has pushed back against the petition to rename the block for the often offensive comedian.
A petition to add Carlin’s name to the block has collected 3,000 signatures in four days.
