Frontiers of Science

Columbia College’s Frontiers of Science program received a $200,000 grant from the Arthur Vining Davis Foundation this semester, which will be used to support the research of postdoctoral science fellows who teach the course.

As someone planning on majoring in Spanish and English, science just does not come easily for me. But I was determined to give Frontiers a chance. During the first seminar, I remember sighing in boredom as my professor taught us about significant figures and how to measure accurately with rulers.

Though reforms are under way, Frontiers still falls short of providing first-year students with a foundational understanding of scientific thinking.

In one of several changes, Frontiers of Science lectures will be split into two sections next semester, according to the faculty members working to improve the pilot course in accordance with student feedback.
