While neither Columbia basketball team went on to postseason play, some Lions have been in the news as of late.

The Light Blue gymnasium turned into a sea of pink Friday night as the Student Government Association and the College Activities Office teamed up with the women’s basketball players to raise school spirit and awareness about breast cancer.

The fourth time was not a charm for the Columbia men’s basketball team.

For people in a massive city like New York, and indeed, an affluent region like the Northeast, it’s sometimes hard to imagine life without a professional sports team to cheer for (and against).

It’s hard to believe, but our current football coach was the offensive coordinator at the school which was, until last week, ranked 13th in the nation.

The life of a high school varsity athlete is generally a complex mixture of sacrifice, team bonding, and glory. The value of this rewarding experience isn’t easily articulated, and playing high school sports is a unique experience for everybody. Once we arrive at college, we often stop playing our respective sports.
