The marriage of engineering and art can produce stunning results. Unfortunately, Columbia is failing to provide an environment for its engineering students to develop these skills.

The Museum of Modern Art fully reasserted its modernity with this weekend’s opening of “Design and the Elastic Mind.” The show, which fills an exhibition gallery occupied just a few weeks ago by the drawings of late 19th century artist George Seurat, catapults the space into 2008 by turning it into a showroom for innovative and futuristic design.

When you think of the Museum of Modern Art, walking on the art is probably not the first thing that springs to mind—but that’s precisely what you can do at the upcoming exhibit “Color Chart.” Featuring work from 40 contemporary artists, the exhibit includes a Jim Lambie installation, which consists of a huge amount of colored tape covering the entire front entrance to the museum.

By the time the major retrospective of Gabriel Orozco’s work, curated by Ann Temkin, opens at the Museum of Modern Art in December 2009, Orozco will likely have reinvented his practice of making art yet again.
