125th Street rezoning

The City Council voted overwhelmingly on Wednesday to approve a sweeping rezoning plan that will reshape the face of 125th Street. The rezoning, approved by a vote of 47-2, is a modified version of a plan originally proposed by the Department of City Planning.

Picket sign in hand, Michael Henry Adams stood in front of Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s house on the Upper East Side several months ago to urge the mayor save Harlem. And although he stood there alone, there are many who join him in expressing apprehension about the area’s future.

Affordable housing and public-school overcrowding took the forefront at Thursday evening’s Community Board 9 meeting, as the board focused on issues surrounding the rezoning of 125th Street before passing several resolutions.

City Hall hosted over 100 local activists, city officials, and concerned Harlem residents at a public hearing Tuesday on plans to change the face of 125th Street.
