Columbia’s wrestling team saw its season come to an end on Friday, March 21 after freshman Ryan Flores lost his consolation match to Matt Spaid from Bloomsburg University 12-2 in the heavyweight class of the NCAA championships.

The Columbia wrestling team (7-7, 3-2 Ivy) has concluded its dual meet season with a strong finish heading into the championships.

I’m sometimes embarrassed to tell friends that, every now and then, I enjoy acting like an uncivilized animal among others at a pro wrestling show. Though if doing it both relieves stress and helps us reconnect with the much larger nonacademic world beyond the gates, maybe it’s just as important to an overall well-roundedness as reading the next great book.

Like many wrestlers, Columbia senior Brandon Kinney is quick to downplay the glaring individualism inherent to his sport.

The Columbia wrestling team took on Harvard and Brown this weekend, defeating both the Crimson and the Bears. These two contests gave the Lions the chance to boost their league standings, and the Light Blue now sits in third place in the Ivy League.

The Lions managed to defeat the Bucknell Bison this past weekend as the Columbia wrestling team posted a 21-16 win in its home opener. Fighting in a neck-and-neck battle that lasted for most of the meet, the Light Blue was able to bounce back from trailing 16-12 to secure its victory, only to fall on Sunday to Maryland in a 22-12 loss.

Without senior co-captain Brandon Kinney, the Columbia wrestling team would be coming back from Las Vegas empty-handed.

Columbia wrestling hopes that what happens in Vegas this weekend helps to give the team a boost going into the winter break.

The Columbia wrestling team had a strong performance on Saturday at the Mat-Town USA Open on Saturday in Lock Haven, Penn. The Lions placed in the top four in eight of the 10 events, and two wrestlers, senior Brandon Kinney and junior Sal Tirico, took first place in their respective weight classes.

As students head home for the Thanksgiving break, the wrestling team will travel to Lock Haven, Penn. on Saturday to compete in the Mat-Town USA wrestling tournament. This will be Columbia’s second wrestling tournament of the season after competing in the East Stroudsburg Open last Saturday.
