While the majority of the Ivy League’s attention will be focused on New Haven for this weekend’s title clash between Harvard and Yale, Dartmouth’s Saturday matchup against Princeton could prove to be a football game for the history books. A win over the Tigers would give the Big Green a 4-3 record in Ivy League play, the team’s first record over .500 in the conference since the Big Green went 4-3 in 2003.

Three Losses Solidify Last Place Finish

Columbia’s women’s volleyball team dropped its final home stand of the season after being swept by Yale 3-0 on Friday (30-26, 30-25, 30-21) and falling to Brown in a 3-1 (30-26, 30-28, 27-30, 30-27) decision on Saturday. With another sweeping loss at Cornell Monday (30-21, 32-30, 30-15), the Lions are now 0-12 in league play and risk finishing the season without an Ivy League win for the second time since 2003.

Columbia field hockey is now 5-0 at the newly dedicated Field Hockey Venue after defeating Brown (0-10, 0-3 Ivy) 4-0. Head coach Katie Beach said a few words before the game during the dedication ceremony, thanking the athletic department and calling it a “fantastic, competitive facility.”

The women’s soccer team has won sloppy games before—its victory against Brown two weeks ago was one of them. But they knew they would have to put together a cleaner, crisper performance to beat Penn last Saturday. Instead, the Lions were sucked into a scrappy match that dealt their Ivy League title hopes a major blow as they fell to the Quakers 2-1.

Men’s tennis suffered a deflating 4-3 loss to Brown in its second round match at the Eastern College Athletic Conference tournament, but came back to defeat Yale for fifth place on Sunday, 4-3. Ranked second in a draw of sixteen teams, Columbia was thought to be a serious contender to win the championship.

New Players Tested in First Weekend of Football Season

Kicker Jon Rocholl and linebacker Alex Gross were named Ivy League Special Teams and Rookie Player of the Week, respectively. Rocholl hit a career-long 49-yard field goal last weekend against Fordham, and also set the school record for career field goals at 22. Gross had three tackles and an interception that was called back in his first collegiate game.
