Although Columbia (20-24, 15-5 Ivy) and Dartmouth (24-14, 15-5) clinched the Lou Gehrig and Red Rolfe Division—respectively—on Saturday, there was still plenty of excitement in the final weekend of Ivy League play.

Spring break of 2008 has thus far done little to shed light on which baseball teams could emerge as division frontrunners once Ivy League play commences.

With the end of the season a short two weeks away, this weekend’s games further established the Cornell Big Red women’s basketball team (9-1 Ivy) as the dominant leader of the conference.

Clutter atop the League

Keeping with the Ivy League tradition of winning at home, Harvard, Dartmouth and Cornell got much-needed separation from the rest of the league with home sweeps this weekend, giving them each 3-1 records in league play.

Cornell (9-5, 1-0 Ivy) sits atop the Ivy perch after defeating Columbia (7-9, 0-1 Ivy) 70-64, on Saturday.

After losing its three leading scorers to graduation, including two-time Ivy Player of the Year Ibrahim Jaaber, Penn’s position atop the Ivy League was questionable coming into this season.

Kicker Jon Rocholl and linebacker Alex Gross were named Ivy League Special Teams and Rookie Player of the Week, respectively. Rocholl hit a career-long 49-yard field goal last weekend against Fordham, and also set the school record for career field goals at 22. Gross had three tackles and an interception that was called back in his first collegiate game.
