Over the past year, my lackadaisical approach to baseball milestones has begun to fade, and last week, it vanished, as I witnessed the final opening day at the majestic Yankee Stadium.

Beneath gray skies and a sea of umbrellas, thousands clung to photos of loved ones and to each other as they gathered to recall the day when the city that never sleeps held its breath.
