A short-handed women’s tennis team dropped two matches this weekend against Penn State and West Virginia at a dual meet at University Park.

The men’s and women’s tennis teams put together outstanding efforts over the weekend and combined to defeat three tough opponents. On Friday, the men comfortably shut out Fairleigh Dickinson 7-0, while the women lost a nail biter against St. John’s, 4-3.

Lifted by sterling play from Carling Donovan, Columbia pulled out two wins this weekend by overcoming the University of Maryland-Baltimore County 4-3 on Friday, and soundly defeating the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, 5-2, on Saturday.

In matches against UMBC and UMass this weekend, women’s tennis is looking to rebound from back-to-back losses at Boston University and Boston College.

The upcoming match against Seton Hall on Friday holds special significance for Ilene Weintraub, CC ’02 and head coach of the women’s tennis team.

The return of Elizabeth Kobak, who was once ranked first nationally in the 16-and-under division, should help the struggling women’s tennis team’s doubles lineup at this weekend’s Flushing Meadows Invitational.
