2+2=5
Yurina Ko is a Barnard College junior from Tokyo who likes to wonder what "two plus two makes five" looked like to Winston Smith in Orwell's "1984." Was if fuzzy? Or was it as clear as a successful eye exam? Was it knowledge from sentiment, like knowing your favorite scent? Or a form of reason different from our scientific - or conventional - ways? This is why Ko chose the philosophy major, to question everything without seeming fallacious and wonder these concepts for homework. This column will question and examine the common phenomena that may seem as straightforward and acceptable as "two plus two makes four." One might argue that "1984" depicted a dystopia. But who says our world isn't?
