Burmese Monks Depict Plight, Protest

In 2007, a group of Burmese monks led the Saffron Revolution, a series of anti-government protests in response to military oppression. On Tuesday evening, four rally participants addressed students in Earl Hall about the plight of Burmese citizens—from human rights abuses to a lack of freedom of speech to the dearth of international awareness.

Burma Coalition Bumps Up Efforts

The Burma 88 Coalition, a humanitarian organization of Columbia students formed in the fall of 2006, has redoubled its activity this semester since the Saffron Revolution in Burma last September.

The coalition is headed by a coordinating committee of 11 students and a core group of nearly 20. Its e-mail listserv reaches 140 people and will likely continue to grow in the months to come, as the group plans to apply for official recognition from the Student Governing Board.

Coalition Protests Burmese Junta

Fifteen students from Columbia’s Burma 88 Coalition, all clad in red, joined activists from across the region to protest the violence against dissidents in Myanmar Monday.

The Amnesty International rally in front of the Burmese mission on the Upper East Side was an attempt to gain supporters in the mounting opposition to the government’s actions in Myanmar, also known as Burma. Myanmar’s military junta violently attacked people protesting the country’s regime over the past week.
