Weaving Words

We all play with words—curious things that largely govern the way people and their cultures express themselves. This column aims to stress the importance of words, their beauty, fragility, and complexity. It will examine ways words are scattered throughout the city and how words are transformed when spoken, translated, and printed. As college students, we are constantly immersed in piles of reading and pages of writing; this is our time to understand past and present voices and to project new ones. Part of my exploration of words, then, involves discovering what kinds of voices and opinions are being projected. We are experiencing an age where the culture of reading and writing is changing, in large part due to the popularity of the Internet. Is the Internet, in turn, affecting our use of words? As a trilingual person who has lived in various countries, I have witnessed shifts in the use of language over time and from culture to culture. I hope to answer these questions with the help of my perspective, my endeavors in the fall of New York City, and the people in and out of the Columbia community.
