In an announcement this morning, the Columbia Athletics Department announced that it is replacing the varsity football and men's basketball teams with men's varsity cricket and curling squads. This will take effect next fall. In a written statement, Atheletic Director M. Dianne Murphy said,
“The addition of these two squads helps us continue our Achieving Excellence Campaign by immediately giving us top tier teams in each sport due to the utter lack of competition across the country."
“Adding curling will increase the number of Canadians at Columbia, something which can only be a positive. A spot on the team will be reserved yearly for a walk-on selected through open tryouts. The only skills needed are the ability to sweep a broom quickly and the voice to yell whoa' and hard' repeatedly.”
