To the Editor: As a community group monitoring the Manhattanville expansion, we have watched Columbia's troubled labor history with interest. To us, it looks like the administration treats its workers in the same way it has treated the community's concerns: with arrogance and contempt. Two thousand jobs in the expansion zone were eliminated through eminent domain. We have been promised that 7,000 jobs will eventually be created for the community. We see no evidence of this. To the contrary, how can we believe in promises of living wage jobs with benefits when Columbia refuses to work that in to its current negotiations? We feel that Low Library should come clean if it is to have any credibility for the promises it has made for the Manhattanville expansion.
