In my time at Columbia, Spectator has transformed from a daily print publication to a weekly one, taken Spectrum through several life cycles, launched a program allowing Speccies eligible for work-study to be paid, restructured its corporate board, rebranded its business section, reduced its city news content, overhauled its original editorial board format, and seen the end of the arts and entertainment section (for now).

What's the difference between this year's crop of Room Selection hopefuls and the kids I babysit? This year's Room Selection hopefuls actually listen(ed) to me!

Earlier today, University President Lee Bollinger made a surprising announcement at Convocation: President Barack Obama, CC '83, would be returning to Columbia in early 2017.

All the seniors have picked, and tomorrow is the first wave of juniors (as well as mixed-point groups of juniors and seniors). Tomorrow is also the last day this week (!!) we have in-person Room Selection—it restarts on Monday.

Our first day of Room Selection has wrapped up. It's been quite the CARNIVAL (ha, ha) of excitement and nervousness. But for those of us picking tomorrow…it's even scarier.

Groups of 2: This year wasn't quite as nice for groups of 2 as last year was, but seniors in 2-person groups should end up having decent choices. While last year, all 25-point groups had Woodbridge rooms in the medium-demand lines (B, A, L, E, F, J) as options, that's unlikely to happen this year—if all senior groups of 2 pick during selection (and don't drop to online), there will only be about seven Watt 1-bedroom apartments or Woodbridge medium-demand apartments left for senior regroup. So that means they definitely will not be available for mixed-point groups. Mixed-point groups and high-ranking junior groups will have a shot at the 19 low-demand Woodbridge rooms. Worst case scenario, the cutoff for all Woodbridge rooms will be around 20/36, the sixth all-junior group of 2 to pick, but it's likely to be a bit easier because some groups might choose to drop to Online instead.

Did you know that there is a ghost that haunts Hartley? That the Nussbaum "penthouse" is just a mafia hideout? That odd-numbered floors in EC have a secret hallway in which you can find the bones of people whose IDs got lost after signing in?

Many students (including myself, until recently) are unaware that Dodge Fitness Center offers group fitness classes like yoga, aerobics, and swimming separate from the course listings. Considering that there is a physical education requirement for all Columbia College and School of Engineering and Applied Science students to graduate, it should come as no surprise that the physical education classes that are listed in the Bulletin fill up extremely quickly when course registration rolls around. So if you have a terrible registration time or can't fit a desired PE class into your schedule, you're out of luck.

"Madam Secretary," CBS's new drama about a female secretary of state, may seem to be a show about Hillary Clinton, but it's much more than that. Anyone over the age of 10 should recognize the parallels, but "Madam Secretary" is its own animal with its own story. This isn't the TV version of "Primary Colors."
