Ever since her seminal 1969 work "Fuck Paintings," Betty Tompkins' photorealistic paintings of sexual acts have been causing a stir. Now she has landed back in New York City with her first solo show since 2009, "REAL ERSATZ," which will explore the role of female artists in depicting sexuality. This exhibition will represent a new direction for her contemporary painting through the use of drawings based on digital prints of these same images. At the heart of the exhibition will be her controversial "Fuck Paintings." Tompkins is no stranger to controversy. Her most recent works, entitled "Fuck Paintings," "Cunt Paintings," and "Masturbation Paintings," have tested the limits of both audiences and critics.
