BY Isabella Farfan November 10 On February 4, 2002, the labor and delivery nurse overseeing my mother’s 50-hour labor marked my entrance into the world with a question for my mother: “Are you sure this is your baby?” To the nurse’s surprise, I looked nothing like my white mother. I was too brown. The nurse’s attempt at a joke was one that no new mother would want to hear after a dangerous and difficult delivery. More importantly, her words defined the very beginning of my existence and foreshadowed a strange affliction I would encounter later.
