After a major transition in work and living accommodations for students amidst the COVID-19 crisis, Barnard has extended its housing registration deadlines to allow students more time to form groups. Columbia housing registration dates have not been changed and registration is already in full swing. If you are planning on living on campus this year, make sure to keep the following deadlines in mind, so you do not lose your chances at housing.

Columbia Timeline

Columbia Housing rules are changing this year. You will no longer need to register in person in the John Jay lounge. Instead, you will be able to complete your registration online. Housing registration will also be extended to two weeks, instead of the one week allowed in the past, to give students more time to form groups and register. Group sizes have also been expanded to a maximum of 10, and Junior and Senior Regroup, where new groups could be formed after others have finished their selection, will no longer occur. You can find more information on the Columbia Housing website or on theShaft.

Feb. 28 to March 12: Registration Period

If you want to live anywhere on campus next year, make sure to register on the Housing Portal by March 12 to guarantee your housing.

March 24: Lottery Numbers Available on the Housing Portal

Lottery numbers that determine each group or individual’s priority for choosing their dorm arrangement will be released. At this point, make sure to check out the upcoming lottery number predictor feature on theShaft, which will allow you to see which dorms will most likely be available, which dorms might be available, and which dorms will definitely not be available for you and your group. However, this feature will only be able to predict potential dorm options at Columbia, not at Barnard.

March 26: Room Selection Times Posted

Check the Housing Portal to see when you’ll be selecting your housing. Make sure your group leader is available at the time and mark your calendar with the date, because the selection period lasts a whole month—yours could be even toward the end of April.

March 31 to April 30: Online Room Selection

The appointed group leader will log into the Housing Portal and select rooms from the dorms still available.

Barnard Timeline

Barnard housing registration will not be changing this year. You can register, choose your groups, and find your lottery number on the Housing Portal.

4 p.m. on May 6: Guaranteed List Deadline

If you do not pick your housing options during your registration time, or you didn’t get to pick the dorm you wanted, you can sign up to be on the Guaranteed List. This means you will be assigned a dorm room based on options that open up due to individuals who have canceled their housing. You will be able to rank the dorms you want to live in and whether you want to live with someone else, but that doesn’t mean you’ll necessarily get what you want. Barnard will try and accommodate your preferences, but it is all based on availability.

4 p.m. on May 11: Cancellation Deadline

To avoid the cancellation fee, make sure to cancel your housing by this date.

You can find more information on the Barnard Housing website, as well as on theShaft for more comprehensive reviews of dorms.
