Water and the treasured manuscripts archived in Butler’s Rare Book & Manuscript Library don’t usually mix, and for good reason. On Tuesday evening, however, the library combined the two in an exhibition titled “Awash in Books: Books for the Year of Water,” featuring a variety of pieces to celebrate and explore how we use Earth’s most precious resource.

Labyrinth Books was opened in 1997 by Chris Doeblin and his business partners with support from Columbia professors and administrators who longed for a local bookstore that focused on academic texts and could serve the greater Morningside Heights community. That store, which would later become Book Culture, opened its doors adjacent to a USPS on 112th Street, a spot where it is currently struggling to remain.

Philip Roth pays it homage in the first line of his aptly named "Great American Novel," as does "Futurama" in an episode from its sixth season. In May, Barnard announced that Jennifer Finney Boylan, celebrated writer and the co-chair of the board of directors of Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, would be joining the English department in the spring 2015 semester as Barnard's inaugural Anna Quindlen Writer-in-Residence. Boylan comes to Barnard after 25 years as the English department co-chair and director of Colby College's creative writing program. In anticipation of her position, Boylan spoke to Spectator about the writing process, her work with GLAAD, and returning to New York City.

IMDb's top 20 most popular TV shows include The Flash, Arrow, Daredevil, and Jessica Jones, all piloted within the past three years. Marvel has recently surpassed Harry Potter to become America's most profitable movie franchise. Even actors are granted a free pass into Hollywood's A-list and given instant celebrity status (Chris Pratt, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Hemsworth among them) after donning the cape and cowl.
