Michael Rebell was growing frustrated. It was October, over 10 months after the trial had ended, and Judge William Smith still had not released a decision on the case. In the 50 years that Rebell had worked in education reform, he had never known a judge to take this long. His career had taught him that change often required patience, but that did not stop him from hoping that Smith’s decision would arrive sooner. Over the past five years, three of the fencing teams atop the national podium were clad in light blue. The Lions are not only regulars at the NCAAs but are also almost always in contention for the championship. Led by head coach Michael Aufrichtig, who heralds a strong “team first” philosophy, Columbia has produced numerous stellar individual fencers as well as three shining national champion teams over the past ten years....
Columbia fencing battled through an extended day of competition, with some athletes fencing as many as 23 bouts, in order to secure 11 qualifications for the national tournament. But as men’s épée struggled, the Lions fell just short of the desired 12 qualifications that would have made for a full roster at Nationals....
