While some students may apply for jobs and move on from academia after they graduate, others may be considering graduate school. If you’re looking to expedite that process and stay in New York after completing your undergraduate degree, consider applying to one of the following special programs offered by Columbia and Barnard. These programs allow you to start your Master of Arts or Master of Science requirements during your senior year, so that you can graduate with a B.A. or B.S. and an M.A. or M.S. in 5 years.

A 14-year-old suspect was arrested in relation to the death of Barnard first-year Tess Majors last night at 10:30 p.m., according to a press briefing by the New York Police Department and Manhattan District Attorney’s Office following an indictment by a grand jury. Authorities say they are confident he was the one who stabbed and killed Majors.

Niels Chardon-Boucaud, a masters student in the School of Engineering and Applied Science, died Friday, SEAS Dean Mary Boyce announced in an email sent to SEAS graduate students yesterday afternoon. He was 21 years old.

I was thinking about an old Kanye West tweet the other day. It was the denouement of one of his weirdly aggressive Twitter rants, and really only notable because it was, in fact, a famous George Bernard Shaw quote: "If you have an apple and I have an apple and we exchange these apples then you and I will still each have one apple. But if you have an idea and I have an idea and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas." At Columbia, the Shaw quote might provoke responses from students that run the gamut from, "Why would Columbia students even be exchanging Apple products? They already have all of Mac's products anyway," to, "I eat intellectual exchange for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, unless I'm too hungover to care. Amen, Mr. Shaw. Amen."

It just became a lot easier for Columbia and Barnard undergrads to apply to the School of Engineering and Applied Science's graduate programs.
