As I pored over my astronomy problem set this weekend, wrestling for the first time in years with unit conversions and significant figures, a thought sprang up in my head that many a past Columbian has also voiced about the Core: Why is this required? It isn't in my field, it isn't something I'm naturally good at, and I don't enjoy it. I promptly distracted myself with a glance at my watch, and then a glance at my iPhone to make sure my watch wasn't slightly off, then a quick refresh of my phone's Gmail just to make sure no earth-shattering messages had been sent to me in the seven minutes since I had last checked.
