The men’s tennis team’s past decade has undeniably been one of ascent. However, the reason for this positive shift is rather unclear because, all in all, the Columbia men’s tennis program has not changed much within these years. The Dick Savitt Tennis Center has remained the team’s home court. The Light Blue still practices for outdoor matches in Riverside Park, making it the only ranked Division I school without outdoor tennis courts. Former head coach Bid Goswami was already in the 28th season of his tenure when the decade opened—his calm, concise method of coaching remained a constant.

In Saturday’s 62-50 loss to the Cornell Big Red, the Lions fell prey to one of the defining issues of the season––their inability to win on the road.

In its first two dual meets of 2020, Columbia went undefeated, besting Cornell and Brown to establish momentum and earn a winning record. In both meets, the Lions’ top swimmers continued their stellar individual seasons while the relay and diving units also found success.

The men’s swimming and diving team began their 2020 season jet-lagged and fatigued. After flying back from a training trip to Hawaii on Sunday, Columbia topped Cornell, which has won only one Ivy meet this season, at home 167-133 on Tuesday, but fell on the road to Brown 186-114 on Saturday.

As the clock hit zero inside Schoellkopf Field, the mood on the Columbia sideline was different from that of other blowouts. More than just being the end of a quiet offensive game, or of a disappointing season overall, this loss felt like the end of an important transitionary era in Columbia football.

With its season coming to a close, Football has one final chance to try to find a silver lining in a season that has not gone as planned. If this Saturday’s bout against the Cornell Big Red is anything like last year’s, the Lions could once again enter the off-season feeling optimistic for what’s ahead.

Columbia men’s soccer closed its season with a resounding 4-0 loss to Cornell on Saturday. While the game marked a disappointing end for the Light Blue, first-year midfielder Uri Zeitz and senior midfielder John Denis earned Rookie of the Week and Ivy League Player of the Week awards, respectively.

In back-to-back contests on Saturday and Sunday, Columbia field hockey fell in hard-fought games to Cornell and No. 21 University at Albany.

Columbia volleyball was swept 3-0 by Cornell in an error-filled Ivy opener. Despite a standout performance from senior middle blocker Chichi Ikwuazom, questions have been raised about the team’s depth.

The Lions achieved their third consecutive shutout on Saturday afternoon, kicking off Ivy play with a decisive 2-0 victory against Cornell.
