New York City is home to the largest Chinese population outside of Asia, with over 100,000 Chinese residents in Manhattan. Although Morningside Heights has never been considered one of New York’s nine recognized Chinatowns, it houses over a dozen Chinese restaurants specializing mainly in Sichuanese and Hunan cuisines.

The men’s tennis team’s past decade has undeniably been one of ascent. However, the reason for this positive shift is rather unclear because, all in all, the Columbia men’s tennis program has not changed much within these years. The Dick Savitt Tennis Center has remained the team’s home court. The Light Blue still practices for outdoor matches in Riverside Park, making it the only ranked Division I school without outdoor tennis courts. Former head coach Bid Goswami was already in the 28th season of his tenure when the decade opened—his calm, concise method of coaching remained a constant.

Men’s tennis bounced back from a devastating loss to No. 34 Northwestern to blank Florida Atlantic University at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center.

After a week off, men’s tennis took a trip to Evanston, Illinois to face DePaul and No. 34 Northwestern. These were the Lions’ first non-tournament dual matches and provided split results for the No. 7 ranked team.

Coming into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Team Indoor Championship, No. 9 men’s tennis was in for an uphill battle. The prestigious 16-team tournament, held in Madison, Wisconsin, brought together some of the best Division I tennis talent in the country.

Women’s tennis successfully defended its title as the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference indoor champion this weekend at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center. The Lions’ win was the fourth ECAC title the program has won in the past seven years under the leadership of head coach Illene Weintraub, who also led the team to victories in 2014, 2016, and 2019. This year’s tournament was the first since 2014 to be hosted by the Light Blue.

After two hard-fought wins over No. 20 Oklahoma State and No. 16, Tennessee, the No. 13 Columbia men’s tennis team came home to the Dick Savitt Tennis Center to sweep the University of South Florida 7-0, marking first-year head coach Howard Endelman’s win at home at the helm.

As former head coach Bid Goswami, who led the team for 37 years, received the 2019 Wilson/ITA Division I Men's Coach of the Year over winter break, men’s tennis opened the new decade with a strong showing at the MLK Invitational in Atlanta.

On Sunday, Oct. 13, the No. 6 doubles tandem of senior Jackie Tang and junior Jack Lin secured the doubles title at the ITA All-American in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This win marks the first doubles title in program history.

Since August, over 300 students have been trained to administer the life-saving drug naloxone to counter the effects of opioid overdose as part of an initiative led by Columbia Health, the Mailman School of Public Health, and the School of General Studies. The team seeks to assess the confidence in participants to carry and administer naloxone, and consider opportunities and barriers for program nationwide expansion to other college campuses.
