Student life at Columbia was hard enough to navigate even before the COVID-19 pandemic, but with people scattered across the globe, finding a community within the student body has become even more difficult. With our monthly Spotify playlists, Spectrum hopes to engage the University community and reminisce about the activities and memories that we share. We hope you enjoy our first installment!

I lied on my first day of Music Humanities class. Our ice breaker included sharing the music we’d been listening to lately or music that we enjoy.

Like any angsty, pre-teen girl growing up in Fairfield County, Connecticut, I read a lot of Sylvia Plath. I thumbed through “The Bell Jar” with a reverence that bordered on the religious and dog-eared my copy of “Ariel” until every corner of every page was creased. Mostly, though, I was captivated by her diaries. Plath’s diaries, which unravelled everything from human nature to “big, dark, hunky boy[s],” touched a raw nerve in my adolescent self. And so, of course, I bought myself one.

Every week Spectrum publishes a pregame playlist. They're usually fun. Last week, we published a tongue-in-cheek Make America (Fall) Break Again playlist under the assumption that a Trump presidency was an impossibility.

Whenever New York starts losing its summer "chill," and starts bringing on its fall *chill,* the promise of newly sharpened pencils from Tom Hanks, the loom and doom of midterms, and a dying back-to-school enthusiasm all rev up my "school days" nostalgia. Fine, you won't be particularly able to !*hardcoredly*! pregame to this week's Pregame Playlist, but why not take a soulful walk through Riverside Park in a sweater, clutching a latte (anything but pumpkin spice, please) with these throwback tunes tickling your ears?
