Contemporary musical theater has embraced the biographical musical, fostering the successes of some of the most thrilling original shows of the last 50 years. From “Sunday in the Park with George” to “Hamilton,” these shows have shaped the landscape of musical theater today by embracing their muses for their nuances and creating shows that feel uniquely authentic to their lives. What the creators of “Lempicka” failed to understand is that, just as every person is singular, so too must be the shows written about their lives. While the life and work of the artist it is based on are certainly notable and interesting enough to inspire a show on this scale, the forgettable and derivative score, lackluster lyricism, and murky plot of “Lempicka” leave the audience feeling as confused about the artist as she was afraid people would be by her paintings.
