I had never thought I would be Opinion editor, much less publisher and vice president, as cliché as that sounds. Before I had come to Spectator, I had heard about not only its hellishly long hours but also its lack of marginalized staffers, disregard for contributors of color, and almost comical sense of self-importance. While the hours were not as long as rumored for Opinion staffers, the rest of the assertions seemed to check out. Not to mention, my “big” had forgotten to reach out to me, and my two hours a week in the office made it incredibly difficult to meet all the people within my section, let alone anyone outside of my section.
We are so honored to introduce Spectator’s 146th managing board. Throughout this year, this new board has shown its commitment to making Spectator a more welcoming place for staff and forming stronger connections with the Columbia, Morningside Heights, and West Harlem communities. We are so excited to watch Spectator grow and develop under this board over the next year.
Every year, Spectator celebrates the accomplishments of the past year’s staff and the ongoing support of its alumni at the Columbia Daily Spectator Annual Awards Dinner. CDSAAD is an opportunity for the Spectator community to come together and honor both current and past staffers. This year, in the first—and hopefully final—virtual CDSAAD, members of Spectator’s corporate board conferred five awards. Three of these awards are longstanding annual awards provided to Spectator staffers. The other two were introduced this year in memory of two members of the Spectator community and will be awarded annually moving forward.
